On January 13, 1964, a B-52 bomber carrying two 24-megaton nuclear bombs crashed on Big Savage Mountain near Grantsville, MD. Many in the local community joined in the search and rescue operation, scouring deep woods in heavy snow and plowing roads for more search personnel to access the areas, as well as running telephone lines and feeding the many rescuers involved in the search.
Browse through a collection of articles on the Western Maryland's Historical Library published about the accident.
