Join local author George Cowgill for a History Talk and Book Signing. Mr. Cowgill will be discussing his recent book Building Deep Creek Lake: A History of the Deep Creek Valley 1922-1925.
This photo-oriented talk will examine the origins of one of the biggest economic engines in Garrett County – Deep Creek Lake. The talk will cover the early stages of building Deep Creek Lake:
- Surveying Deep Creek Valley
- Purchasing the land
- Clearing the trees, and clearing out over 100 farms and homesteads.
Some of the people and families impacted by the impoundment will be highlighted. The massive project of constructing the tunnels, dam, power house, roads, and bridges will also be discussed. Participants will learn of mishaps and calamities of this fast-moving project. Lastly, some of the earliest views after the impoundment, just as the water was rising, will be presented.
George Cowgill spent his formative years in Deer Park, Maryland. He is an engineer and inventor, having been awarded more than 40 U.S. Patents. Mr. Cowgill earned a Master of Science Degree in Information Technology from Towson University in 2011. He is a lifelong history buff; his first history book was A History of Mtn. Lake Park – 1881-1921.
