What is creative nonfiction? Creative nonfiction is memory-or-fact-based writing that uses the styles of fiction, memoir, and essay. It includes the author's life and/or the author's eye on the lives of others. It includes memoir, personal essay, literary journalism, nature writing, city writing, or travel writing. What links all these forms is that the "I," the literary version of the author, is either explicitly or implicitly present - the author is in the work. Students should be prepared to write weekly assignments, read them in class, and participate in critiquing the work of others.
In addition to the craft of writing, during the last two meetings, we'll also focus on researching magazine markets, and writing effective query letters.
